  • Tension At Hyderabad University As Students Protest Bulldozers On Land Next To Campus

A political row has erupted with the opposition BRS targeting the Congress government and accusing the police of dragging the protesting students by their hair and thrashing them.

Tension erupted at the University of Hyderabad yesterday after the police clashed with students protesting against the Telangana government’s plan to redevelop 400 acres of land next to their campus. This has led to a political row with the opposition BRS accusing the police of dragging the protesting students by their hair and thrashing them.

Several students, who alleged bulldozers and earthmovers were brought as part of the redevelopment plan, were detained but they were released later.

The state government, which plans to set up an IT park on the land bordering the varsity campus, reportedly issued a proposal to auction the land. Raising environmental concerns, a section of the students opposed the move and staged demonstrations.

The government claimed its goal was to promote investment in the state and that the land had nothing to do with the university. The students said they rushed to the site after noticing bulldozers arriving there – they climbed atop the heavy demolition machines while raising “go back” slogans. A group of marching students were also seen raising “police raj murdabad” slogans.

Multiple videos showed the police clashing with the students and dragging them into police vans.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by former chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, said dozens of bulldozers were brought to flatten the land under police protection and the students who opposed were beaten with batons and dragged by their hair.

“Girls were crying that their clothes were torn, but they ignored them and took them to the police station. About 200 people were arrested. On Sunday, when the police officers started work to level 400 acres of land belonging to the university, they showed such harshness on the students who tried to stop them,” the opposition party said.

Targeting Congress and Rahul Gandhi, it said, “This is a market of betrayal and not mohabbat ki dukaan (shop of love)”. The phrase is a reference to Mr Gandhi’s iconic dialogue that he had used as part of his campaign against the BJP in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections last year.

“The Congress’ “Mohabbat ki Dukaan” has now reached the Hyderabad Central University. Rahul Gandhi goes around holding a constitution in hand and preaching while his government is doing exactly the opposite,” the BRS added.

The police, however, said only 53 students were taken into preventive custody for obstructing government officials from doing their work. An official alleged some of them even assaulted the police. Police cases will be filed against them, he said.

Condemning the police action, the university’s students’ union claimed they had only staged a peaceful rally in the area. The students have a democratic right to protest, they said, accusing the police of forceful detentions and “manhandling” the students.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had earlier denied the students’ claims and alleged they were being instigated. He had said the land falls under the city’s IT hub and has no connection to the university. A university official too said the land’s ownership has been with the government since 1974.

  • “Development At Cost Of Biodiversity Is Destruction”: Dia Mirza Backs Hyderabad Students

Actor Dia Mirza has given a call to save the forest in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli, backing the students of Hyderabad Central University.

Actor Dia Mirza has come out in support of the students protesting against the redevelopment of 400 acres of land adjacent to the Hyderabad Central University. Calling for a sustainable future, she has given a call to save the forest in Gachibowli.

Development at the cost of biodiversity is destruction, said Ms Mirza, who is from Hyderabad.

“Students are raising their voices for a future where nature thrives. Forests, not IT parks, offer young people a chance at a sustainable tomorrow. ‘Development’ at the cost of biodiversity is DESTRUCTION. Save Kancha Forest in Gachibowli, Hyderabad,” her post read.

The Telangana government plans to set up an IT park on the land and has asserted it has nothing to do with the university. Raising environmental concerns, the students claimed the construction plan threatened the forest’s flora and fauna.

The students, who have been protesting the auction of the land, have announced an indefinite boycott of classes until their demands are met.

The situation escalated on Sunday when bulldozers arrived to flatten the land. A confrontation ensued and the students were thrashed by the police, who accused them of obstructing government officials from doing their work.

A political row erupted with the BRS and BJP targeting the Congress government over their manhandling of the students.

  • Andhra Pradesh IPS Officer Arrested In Mumbai Actor Harassment Case

PSR Anjaneyulu, who was the intelligence chief in the previous YSRCP government, is already under suspension.

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has been arrested by Andhra Pradesh police for the alleged harassment and wrongful arrest of a Mumbai-based actor. PSR Anjaneyulu, who was the intelligence chief in the previous YSRCP government, is already under suspension. The 1992-batch IPS officer was arrested in Hyderabad and is being taken to Vijayawada.

The actor, whose name has been withheld, had last year accused the police officials of wrongfully arresting her and threatening her to withdraw a sexual assault case filed against a top executive of a Mumbai-based corporation.

Last year, when the YSRCP was still in power, the actor and her parents were arrested over a land-related cheating complaint filed by Kukkala Vidyasagar, a ruling party leader. The instructions reportedly came from Mr Anjaneyulu to the two other officials.

After a change in regime, the actor lodged a police complaint alleging that the officials conspired with Mr Vidyasagar to target her and her family. The forgery case filed against her is false, and she was mentally and physically harassed, she alleged.

She claimed she and her elderly parents were picked up without prior notice and were subjected to humiliation for over 40 days in judicial custody.

Acting on her complaint, the government had in September suspended three officers, including Mr Anjaneyulu. The two others were former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kranti Rana Tata and then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vijayawada) Vishal Gunni.

The suspended officials are accused of acting under political pressure while not adhering to the protocols.

While Mr Anjaneyulu has been accused of abusing authority, Mr Tata has been charged with failing to properly supervise the probe. The former Vijayawada Commissioner had reportedly issued orders for the arrest based on oral directions from his superior. Mr Gunni reportedly failed to thoroughly examine the complaint before arresting the actor.

A Hyderabad influencer allegedly threw coffee and yelled at a store employee in a mall after the staff laughed at her.

In a video, Shaikh Maryam Ali alleged the saleswoman mocked her when she walked into the store. This angered Ms Ali, who then threw coffee at the employee and left the store.

In the clip going viral on X, Ms Ali was heard screaming at the staff; the visuals showed coffee spilt all over the counter and floor. The employee looked shocked. Ms Ali said: “That girl is stupid; it was totally the worst experience, and she is so arrogant.”

Later, she also used a cuss word for the employee.

She added that she was “angry” because of the woman’s behaviour, which “ruined” her mood.

“How does the company even hire such people? They have no idea how to behave with customers,” Ms Ali continued.

Ms Ali also spilt some coffee on herself while throwing it at the staff. She kept berating the employee until the very end of the video.

The video was shared on X with the caption, “This is just stupid. Girls like these should be banned from malls and sent to mental institutions. Shaikh Mariyam Ali thinks she owns the whole world and everyone works for her.”

People on X backed the salesperson and chastised the influencer for her disrespect. Others even demanded that Ms Ali be prohibited from entering the mall.

  • Probe Agency Seizes 45 Vintage Cars After Raids In Hyderabad

The searches were undertaken on Monday at five locations in Hyderabad under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the federal probe agency said in a statement.

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday said it has seized 45 old cars, including some vintage ones, apart from Rs 23 lakh in cash and some foreign currency during searches in Hyderabad in a money laundering case linked to alleged illegal sale of government land.

The searches were undertaken on Monday at five locations in Hyderabad under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the federal probe agency said in a statement.

The ED case stems from an FIR registered by Telangana Police against private persons and government officials in connection with “illegal” sale of government land involving forgery of documents and manipulation of revenue records.

Describing the case, the agency said government land or ‘Bhoodan’ land at Nagaram village under the Maheshwaram Mandal (Ranga Reddy district) was “falsely claimed” by a woman named Khaderunissa as her ancestral property.

Revenue records were “fraudulently” mutated and the land was sold to various entities in association with several middlemen. These middlemen, in connivance with government officials, “forged” the documents and changed the land revenue records, resulting in de-notifying the said land from the prohibited list and its subsequent sale to some private parties, the ED alleged.

Residences and farmhouses, including that of Khaderunissa, Mohd Munawar Khan, Mohd Lateef Sharfan, Mohd Akhtar Sharfan and Mohd Sukoor, were searched and “incriminating” documents related to fraudulent sale and purchase of government land, Indian currency worth Rs 23 lakh and 12,000 UAE Dirhams were seized, the agency said.

Forty-five used cars, including several vintage makes, were also seized from the farmhouse premises of Mohd Munawar Khan, it said.
